I was the level and game designer of On Thin Ice. An 11 person game project which draws inspiration from Overcooked.

I worked a lot with the step by step implementation of new mechanics while letting the players figure out most of the controls on their own. I tried implementing one new mechanic or "rule" per level. By rule i mean things like a wall placement which forces another playstyle.

I think I managed to do this quite well with many game testers of different ages from 10-60+ all understanding the mechanics of the game within 1 or 2 attempts at each level.

Another big focus was "declunking" game mechanics by careful placements of points of interest (in this case it meant not placing them diagonally since throwing at an angle was awkward for most players) and also making it clear which bears are on their way out and which are on their way somewhere else by placing exits strategically.
